How to Rent Your First Private Number on SMS Activate
Updated
Free public numbers look tempting, but they are shared with everyone who finds them, reused across many services and often blocked by the apps you want to verify. This tutorial is for anyone who needs one working number for a verification and wants the honest trade-offs before spending anything. We explain why free numbers rarely work, then walk you through the alternative. By the end you will have a private number rented on SMS Activate, visible in your list and ready to receive SMS.
What you need
- An email address and a password to register on sms-activate.app
- A bank card or cryptocurrency, since the balance is topped up with either
- The name of the platform you plan to verify, so you can check its rules first
- A Telegram account, if you would rather manage numbers and read SMS in Telegram
- A preferred country in mind, chosen from the ones listed as Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Israel, Puerto Rico, and United States
Steps
Create your account
Open sms-activate.app and register with an email and a password. Confirm the registration if the service asks you to verify the address. If you prefer to work from your phone, the same service is available as a Telegram bot, so you can handle everything from a chat instead.
Tip: Pick one place to work from, either the website or Telegram, so your rentals stay in one list.
Top up your balance
Open the balance section and add funds with a bank card or cryptocurrency. Numbers are rented for 28 days at a time, with prices from $8 for that period. Add only what you need for now, because the rental fee is non-refundable once a number is assigned to you.
Check the platform first
Before you spend anything, find the rules of the platform you want to verify and read what it says about phone numbers. Some services accept virtual numbers and some refuse them, and we cannot promise that any platform will accept one. A few minutes of reading here can save a wasted rental.
Tip: Look for a help page about verification, sign up or supported countries.
Choose a country and rent
Go to the number rental section and choose a country that suits your platform. Numbers are currently available in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Israel, Puerto Rico, and United States, so compare the list with what the platform expects. Confirm the rental and the fee will come out of your balance for a 28-day period.
Find the number in your list
When the rental is active, the number appears in your list of rented numbers. Open the number's settings to see the number itself, how long is left on the rental and which options are attached to it. Keep that page handy, since incoming messages will show up there.
Tip: Note the rental end date somewhere, so a verification is not cut short.
Receive SMS and calls
Give the number to the platform and ask it to send the code. The number receives SMS and calls, and incoming messages appear on the website or in Telegram. If you want them elsewhere, you can forward incoming SMS to a Telegram chat or a webhook.
Handle renewal
Decide how long you want to keep the number. The rental renews automatically every 28 days while your balance covers the next period, and you can switch that off in the number's settings when you are done. Check the remaining time before a verification, so nothing lapses mid-way.
Tip: Turn renewal off once the code has arrived and the account is secured.
Shared free numbers are rarely worth the time, since they are already used by strangers and blocked by many apps. A private number from SMS Activate is the calmer option: you rent it for 28 days, you control the renewal, and you read the SMS in one place.

The code has not arrived.
Ask the platform to send it again and watch the number's settings for the message. Delivery depends on the platform and the sending side, so we cannot promise when a code will land. If nothing arrives at all, write to contact@freevirtualnumbers.com and we will check the rental.
The platform rejected the number.
The rental fee is non-refundable, so treat this as a lesson rather than a refund request. Read the platform's rules before renting again, and consider a different country from Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Israel, Puerto Rico, and United States only if those rules suggest it would make a difference.
The number renewed and took more balance than I expected.
Automatic renewal stays on while your balance covers the next 28-day period. Open the number's settings and switch renewal off, then decide whether to top up again or let the rental end. Keeping a small balance is an easy way to limit surprise charges.
