Receiving Your First Verification SMS With a Virtual Number

Updated

This tutorial is for anyone who has been hunting for a free virtual number and keeps running into shared, reused lines that verification apps already block. If you have moved on and rented a private number instead, we will walk you through receiving your first verification SMS with it, from checking that the number suits your platform to finding the message and knowing what to try when nothing arrives. By the end you will know exactly where the code shows up and what to do next.

What you need

Steps

  1. Check the number suits your platform first

Before you rent anything, confirm that the service you want to verify accepts virtual numbers at all. Read the platform's help pages or ask their support whether a rented number will work for the verification you need. The rental fee is non-refundable, so a few minutes of checking saves you a wasted payment.

Tip: If the platform says nothing about virtual numbers, ask them directly rather than guessing.

  2. Top up the balance and choose a country

Sign in to SMS Activate on sms-activate.app, or open its Telegram bot if you prefer to work in a chat. Open the balance section and add funds with a bank card or cryptocurrency, then choose a country and rent a number. Numbers are currently available in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Israel, Puerto Rico, and United States, and a 28 day rental starts from $8.

Tip: Keep the number in international format somewhere handy, since most forms expect the country code first.

  3. Open the number's settings and decide where messages appear

Open the number's settings and look at where incoming SMS will be delivered. You can read messages in the inbox on the website or in the Telegram bot, or forward them to a Telegram chat or a webhook so they reach you elsewhere. Pick whichever route you will actually keep an eye on during verification.

Tip: Set up forwarding before you start, so you are not stuck watching a dashboard you are about to leave.

  4. Start the verification on your platform

Open the app or site you need to verify and move through the registration or login flow until it asks for a phone number. Enter the number exactly as it appears in your SMS Activate dashboard, including the country code. Confirm the request so the platform sends its code to your number.

Tip: Most platforms allow only a limited number of code requests, so check the digits for typos before you send.

  5. Read the incoming message

Wait in whichever place you chose in the number's settings: the inbox on the website, the Telegram bot, the chat you forwarded to, or your webhook. The message shows the sender and the code in the text as soon as the platform delivers it. Copy the code and enter it on the platform to finish the verification.

Tip: Codes are usually short lived, so enter the code soon after you read it.

  6. Give the code time to land

If nothing has appeared yet, give it a few minutes and refresh the inbox before you change anything. Some platforms queue their messages, and a delay on either side can slow delivery down. Avoid requesting the code over and over, since repeated attempts can lock the field for a while.

Tip: Check that forwarding is still active if you set it up earlier and then left the dashboard.

  7. Keep or cancel the rental

The number stays yours for 28 days and renews automatically for another 28 days as long as your balance covers the fee. Open the number's settings once you no longer need it and switch renewal off. Since the rental fee is non-refundable, only stop the rental when you are sure the platform has accepted the number and you do not need it again.

Tip: A number kept for the full 28 days can handle later logins on the same platform.

A private number rented through SMS Activate gives you a dedicated inbox for 28 days, so your verification codes are not sitting on a line shared with strangers. Check that the platform accepts virtual numbers first, then watch the inbox you set up in the number's settings.

If something goes wrong

The code does not appear in the inbox

Refresh the inbox and check that the number was entered in international format with the right country code. Request the code again from the platform and give it several more minutes to arrive. If you forward messages to a Telegram chat or webhook, confirm that the forwarding is still switched on and the destination is ready.

The platform rejects the number

Not every platform accepts rented numbers, and some block whole ranges of them. Ask the platform's own support whether a virtual number can be used for that verification before you rent another one. You can also write to us at contact@freevirtualnumbers.com and we will look at what happened with the number you used.

I need the code while I am away from the dashboard

Set up forwarding in the number's settings before you begin verification. Incoming SMS can be sent to a Telegram chat or a webhook, so the code reaches you wherever you happen to be. Make sure the forwarding target is working before the platform sends anything.
